Before choosing AI, make the work and decisions clear.
A model can produce an answer without making the surrounding work reliable. First decide what information it may use, what a person must verify, what happens when confidence is low, and where the result is recorded.
DEFINE THE TASK
Give AI a bounded role in the workflow.
Specify the user, input, expected output, decision it supports, and the next system or person that receives the result.
- Use approved and appropriately scoped data.
- Keep human approval for material decisions.
- Record prompts, outputs, and corrections where needed.
PLAN FOR FAILURE
Design a safe path for uncertainty and exceptions.
Test incomplete, conflicting, and unusual inputs. Decide when to abstain, ask for clarification, escalate, or continue without AI.
- Set review thresholds and fallback steps.
- Measure quality on representative cases.
- Assign ownership for monitoring and updates.
